The Archdiocese of Philadelphia owns and operates thirteen cemeteries in Pennsylvania. This changed several years ago when the Archdiocese leased the operation of these cemeteries to Stonemor Partners based in Levittown PA. for an initial sum of 56 million dollars.
Stonemor Partners is a publically traded company which owns and operates hundreds of cemeteries and nearly one hundred funeral homes. They are the second largest corporation within this market. This lease from the Archdiocese meant big changes when it comes to the headstones, grave markers, and cemetery monuments being sold to Catholic families.

For the first time in Archdiocese Cemetery history, families are now faced with a professional group of salespeople offering headstones and burial vaults within the Catholic Cemeteries. Previously, the Archdiocese only sold burial plots (graves), and now with Stonemor aboard, families are inundated with telemarketing and other sales tactics. The attempt at monopolizing this market is intense.

Currently, Stonemor Partners operates All Saints Cemetery in Newtown, PA, All Souls Cemetery in Coatesville, PA, Calvary Cemetery in Conshohocken, PA, Cathedral Cemetery in Philadelphia, PA, Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, PA, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Cheltenham, PA, Immaculate Heart of Mary Cemetery in Linwood, PA, New Cathedral Cemetery in Philadelphia PA, Resurrection Cemetery in Bensalem, PA, Saint John Neumann Cemetery in Chalfont, PA, Saint Michael Cemetery in Chester, PA, Holy Savior Cemetery in Penn Township, PA, and the Crown Jewel of them all is Saints Peter & Paul in Springfield, PA.
Each of these cemeteries can and does sell cemetery monuments and headstones directly to families who own plots at these cemeteries. They are also selling pre-need monuments and headstones. This is all in an attempt to capitalize on the profitable headstone and cemetery monument industry, and also to prevent families from purchasing their headstone from an “outside monument company”. Their salespeople will do or say almost anything to prevent families from shopping around for a Catholic Headstone.
If you think about the costs involved in running a large Corporation, including paying the salespeople a hefty commission, then you will not be surprised that the prices Stonemor charges for headstones and grave markers are in many instances much more than what is available from a dedicated, privately owned monument company such as Memorials by Design.
