Garden State Cemetery Company is a privately held corporation which owns and operates four cemeteries in Southern New Jersey. Each of these cemeteries has specific guidelines regarding the type of headstones and grave markers permissible.
Eglington Cemetery in Clarksboro, New Jersey is the “main office” for all four cemeteries. The other three cemeteries, Hillcrest Memorial Park in Sewell NJ, Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Mt. Royal NJ, and Woodbury Memorial Park in Woodbury NJ, are governed by Eglington Cemetery. Although there are some similarities in the rules at each cemetery, it helps to be aware of the more specific details.
Let’s start with the headstones and markers allowed by Eglington Cemetery. There are two distinct types. In some sections of the cemetery, only the flush bronze markers or bronze plaques are required. They are installed level with the ground and are required to be mounted to a concrete base, which is supplied by the company you select to make your bronze marker. The other sections of Eglington Cemetery allow granite headstones in any color, shape or design you choose. There is, however a size restriction. For a single grave, Eglington Cemetery limits the width of the headstone to no more than 30”. It is a 60” width for a double grave. The maximum height in all cases is 36”.
The rules governing headstones and bronze plaques at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Sewell NJ and Gates of Heaven in Mt Royal NJ are pretty much the same as those for Eglington Cemetery. Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gates of Heaven have sections which only allow flush bronze markers, and sections which allow granite headstones. The size restrictions are the same as they are for Eglington Cemetery. However, you can still design a custom headstone as the color, shape and designs allowable are not restricted.
Woodbury Memorial Park, conversely, is predominantly a bronze marker or bronze plaque Cemetery. All of the bronze markers are mounted to a concrete base which is 4” thick. This is used to support the marker. The most popular sizes for a single grave bronze marker are 24”x12” and 24”x14”. The most popular sizes for a double grave bronze plaque are 44”x13” and 44”x14”. The concrete base for all sizes is 2” larger than the markers which leaves a 2” “border” of concrete around all four sides of the markers.
Regardless of the cemetery or the type of headstone or marker required, each cemetery charges a fee for the “foundation”. There is also a permit fee added to that. The “foundation fee” in the case of granite headstones is a concrete slab under the headstone to ensure it remains true and level. In the case of the bronze markers, it is more of an “installation fee” as the bronze markers already have an attached concrete base. The fee is calculated by the square inch in either case.
