Whether you call them Jewish headstones, Jewish cemetery monuments, or Hebrew headstones, they are a traditional breed when it comes to their design.

Jewish Headstone Design

Historically speaking, Jewish Headstones or Jewish Cemetery monuments have always been simplistic in design. Offering the more traditional ornamentation such as an oil lamp, The Star of David, and other religious symbolism has been the norm. But, that has changed in the recent past as Jewish headstone designs have become contemporary.

More and more Jewish families are now electing to remember a life lived by using more personal designs. Memorials by Design has done Jewish headstones and Jewish monuments with everything from cars to cats, and boats to butterflies. It seems that Jewish Families are now realizing that it is ok to put Dad’s favorite sports team, or mom’s favorite pet on the headstone or cemetery monument. But, the Hebrew or Yiddish letters still go on there.

In addition to the English lettering for names and epitaphs on Jewish headstones, the Hebrew and Yiddish lettering is still prevalent. In most cases, families still add the Hebrew name of the person on Jewish headstones. In fact, at many Jewish Cemeteries it is required that the Hebrew name is on the Jewish headstone or Jewish bronze marker.

Jewish Cemeteries in South Jersey

There are several Jewish Cemeteries in Southern New Jersey. It seems ironic that Northern and Central New Jersey as well as the Philadelphia area have many more Jewish Cemeteries than does Southern New Jersey. But, they all have independent sets of rules when it comes to the shape, size, and style of Cemetery monuments or markers they allow. Crescent Burial Park in Pennsauken New Jersey, Alliance Cemetery in Norma, New Jersey, Beth Kehilah Cemetery in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, and Rodef Shalom Cemetery in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey are the predominate Jewish Cemeteries in southern New Jersey.

Crescent Burial Park in Pennsauken, New Jersey on Route 130 requires upright granite Jewish headstones as well as flush bronze cemetery markers dependent upon the section in which your graves are located.

Alliance Cemetery in Norma, New Jersey is a small, local Jewish cemetery and their rules are not as stringent as most other cemeteries.

Rodef Shalom Cemetery and Beth Kehilah Cemetery are both located in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey on the Black Horse Pike. They allow predominately upright granite Jewish Headstones. These two Jewish Cemeteries are situated next to each other so to some people it may be a bit confusing where one starts and the other one ends.
